Texas A&M Football: Haynes King is the fastest quarterback in the country
The Texas A&M football team has a handful of positions that will need to be filled prior to the start of the 2022 season. Some are more obvious than others — look at the runningback spot, where Devon Achane will take over starting duties for Isaiah Spiller — while some will require a position battle to declare a starter.
By a mile, the most prominent position battle in the 2022 offseason is to determine who will take over starting quarterback duties. As things stand, this competition is between Haynes King, Conner Weigman, and Max Johnson.
While Johnson and Weigman are newcomers, King began 2021 as the starter before dropping with an injury. Depending on who you ask, he could be considered the frontrunner in this battle. But outside of experience with this team, what does King hold over his counterparts?
Texas A&M football QB Haynes King’s speed separates him from the competition
Make no mistake — all three potential starting quarterbacks on Texas A&M’s roster are great athletes. Johnson comes from a football family, with his brother Jake Johnson also on the roster as a tight end and his dad Brad being a former NFL quarterback. Weigman is a dual-sport athlete, also on the baseball team at Texas A&M.
King, however, might have the most applicable athleticism out of the three quarterbacks. That athleticism is in relation to his speed, which is among the best on the team.
If you’ve watched tape on King, one thing sticks out — his evasiveness. Generally speaking, a player with a stature around 6’3″ won’t be the fastest guy on the field. With King, that couldn’t be further from the truth.
According to 247Sports, King has been clocked at over 22 miles per hour, one of the fastest speeds on the entire team. According to the team, only three players actually exceeded 22 miles per hour.
I could have done deeper research but I can’t find an example of another active quarterback in college football running the ball that fast.
Due to an injury that knocked King out of his first starting season in just his second performance, we weren’t able to see his athleticism on full display. 2022 could give him an opportunity to prove that he’s the fastest quarterback in college football.
