Texas A&M football just got one step closer to landing this five-star DB
The Texas A&M football team has been among the nation’s elite when it comes to recruiting for the past few seasons. If there was any doubt of this, Texas A&M’s 2022 class confirmed it. Quite literally, Jimbo Fisher put together the greatest class in the history of college football.
He isn’t done yet.
Fisher is looking to send his 2023 class to similar ranks but had a major setback already, losing his top prospect in Eli Holstein. The quarterback recently decommitted, though he could still return to Texas A&M with a future commitment from one of the most elite players in the 2023 cycle.
Texas A&M football HC Jimbo Fisher will look to bounce back with a commitment from this elite cornerback/safety
As things stand, Texas A&M’s 2023 class only has three commitments. Those commitments come at two different positions — two on the defensive line and one on the offensive line. It looks like Fisher is looking to expand his class, as he is heavily recruiting a defensive back.
That defensive back is Tony Mitchell, listed as a cornerback. As you’ll see, however, the Aggie target will likely switch to the safety position at the next level. Here’s a small excerpt from 247Sports’ Cooper Petagna.
"Has the ability to play corner if needed but more than likely projects as a safety at the next level. High processing player that wins with instincts more than physical traits. Will add value in multiple special teams units. Projects as a high impact starter at a Power Five program at the next level. Will more than likely need a year to develop before making considerable contributions."
On Monday, Mitchell listed Texas A&M in his top-5. Here is the full list via his Twitter account.
As you can see, Texas A&M will be competing with Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and Oregon — an elite list of schools. The Alabama Crimson Tide will have an inherent advantage, as the A&M target is a native of Alabaster, Alabama.
Per 247Sports’ composite rankings, Mitchell is the 19th-ranked player in the 2023 class. Adding him would likely boost A&M’s class back into the top-10, sending them in the right direction for the future of the program.
