Every Texas A&M football position battle as 2022 approaches
Defensive Line
Realistically, I could split the defensive line position into four groups. That said, Jimbo Fisher has shown a tendency to move guys all over the defensive line.
The positions here that seem relatively secure are on the inside with Shemar Turner (not to be confused with Shemar Stewart) and McKinnley Jackson looking ready to fill the defensive tackle spots. On the outside, question marks arise.
True freshman Shemar Stewart will look to earn playing time but he’ll be fighting an uphill battle against Jahzion Harris, Fadil Diggs, Elijah Jeudy, and a handful of other guys. A loaded freshman class could make this the most interesting position battle throughout the regular season.
Linebacker
Again, “linebacker” is a pretty broad term. This position group has more than a handful of talented players seeking multiple positions. After a strong redshirt freshman campaign, it looks like Edgerrin Cooper will be the mike linebacker. Next to him, we could see a solid battle.
This battle is between Chris Russell Jr. and Andre White. That said, true freshman and top-ten overall prospect Harold Perkins could sneak in and steal a starting role. I’d expect one of the more experienced players to initially earn the starting spot with Perkins sneaking up as the season goes on.
