Texas A&M Football: 3 freshmen who could start in 2022
In case you missed it, Texas A&M football hauled in the highest rated recruiting class of all-time in 2022, according to 247sports. This class, on paper, is unbelievable to say the least.
For the 2022 recruiting cycle, Jimbo Fisher reeled in eight (yes, eight) five-star recruits. Add in 20 four-stars, and that’s insanity. Might as well throw in two three-stars for good measure. That is what they call an impressive class.
With this number of high-level recruits, you have to wonder how many of them will make an immediate impact in college. In College Station, before freshmen are included, they already had a solid roster, with shoe-in starters at almost every position.
Texas A&M football is rich in young talent, but how many can compete for starting spots as soon as this season?
There are some positions that are locked up by upperclassmen, including the running back spot, linebacker positions, and pretty much the entire offensive line, so we won’t really get into those spots. However, along the defensive line, wide receiver corps, and defensive back unit could all have starting positions up for grabs.
Honorable Mentions: QB Conner Weigman, CB Denver Harris, DE Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy
The starting quarterback race is the most notable topic around the team at the moment. It is seemingly a competition between Max Johnson and Haynes King. However, freshman Conner Weigman is still being given a shot at QB1. His chances are low, but I felt it was necessary to throw him in.
Freshmen cornerback Denver Harris is the next man up for the outside spot on the defense. Harris was a five-star recruit this past cycle and he is having a solid camp thus far. However, Tyreek Chappell and Myles Jones have the starting gigs locked up, for now. I would not be surprised if Harris is starting by the end of the season, but for now, I would expect only some rotation snaps for him.
The last honorable mention is in favor of five-star defensive end Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy. To be honest, Brownlow-Dindy would be in my top three of this list if he wasn’t injured. With him being a freshman, I feel he will, and should, be brought back slower than most, to ensure nothing more comes of his injury.
