The Texas A&M football player garnering the most draft attention currently is star defensive back Antonio Johnson. Johnson is deserving of every ounce of coverage because of his elite instincts, motor, and coverage skills.

The elite safety prospect is coveted for not just his outstanding on-field play, but because of the versatility he provides, being able to play in the box, in the slot, and as a linebacker in some cases. He is the entire package as a back seven defender, providing great run stopping and coverage ability.

Last season, Johnson scored very highly in many PFF grades. He finished with an 89.5 run stopping grade, an 88.7 coverage grade, a 78.5 tackling grade, and an overall defensive grade of 87.4. These all ranked high among other defensive backs last season, those including Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner, Kyler Gordon, Jaquan Brisker, and Lewis Cine, all of whom were high draft picks in 2022.

Johnson seems to have the inside track on becoming a first-round pick. He has proven himself as one of the best defensive backs, and even defenders in the nation. Building off that will be difficult, but if he can match what he did last season, we can expect Johnson’s name to be called in Day 1.
