Texas A&M Football: Cornerback depth

Starters: CB Tyreek Chappell (SO), CB Jaylon Jones (JR), NB Antonio Johnson (JR)

Backups: Myles Jones (GR), Denver Harris (FR), Deuce Harmon (SO)

Reserves: Brian George (SR), Josh Moten (RS SO)

This cornerback room has a lot to work with to say the least. This room brings back a lot of high-ceiling prospects, and some even garnering NFL interest.

The starters will more than likely feature Tyreek Chappell on the outside and star talent Antonio Johnson playing a nickel/safety/linebacker hybrid role again this season. The biggest question is who will play opposite of Chappell. I expect junior Jaylon Jones to take the spot over sixth-year senior Myles Jones. Jaylon has a higher ceiling than Myles and played well last season during Myles’s absence.

The backups will feature an interesting blend of experience and inexperience. The experience certainly comes from Jones being the first outside corner off the bench. The inexperience will come from freshman five-star Denver Harris and sophomore Deuce Harmon. Harris could be a darkhorse to become a starter by the end of the season, and Harmon should be the first slot corner off the bench.

The reserves should consist of senior Brian George and redshirt sophomore Josh Moten. I would expect George to push for playing time due to his classification, but I think Harris and Jones are too talented to keep behind him. Moten had to miss 2021 due to injury, so hopefully this season could be a good way for him to get conditioned again.
