The 2022 regular season is in 11 days for Texas A&M football. They start out the season at home against Sam Houston State on September 3rd. There are reasons to believe that the team as a whole takes that step into the elite stage of college football teams, and others seem to believe so as well.

The Aggies were ranked 7th overall in the country in the coaches’ poll earlier this month, and the media seems to agree about where they stand as well. The Associated Press ranked Texas A&M as the No. 6 team in the nation in their preseason poll late last week.

College Station has yet to hoist an SEC championship trophy since their first season in the conference in 2012. This year could be the year for Jimbo Fisher and company, and here are three reasons why.

1. Texas A&M football has options at quarterback

While this may seem like not a great reason they could win the SEC, it eliminates some risk if an injury were to occur. Sure, it would be nice to have a superstar quarterback at the head of an offense, and who knows, there might be one in the room. However there have been many teams that have swapped quarterbacks during the season, or in the biggest game of the season, and been successful.

There isn’t a bona fide starter in this QB room, but there are two, even three great options. Haynes King returns as the longest tenured signal-caller at College Station. He knows the playbook and offers a high-ceiling. Max Johnson, who is also competing to start, is an LSU transfer that had a good season last year. He offers a good floor and would be one of the best backups in the nation.

Conner Weigman would be a last-resort player, but even he offers immense upside as a five-star true freshman. He needs time to work under Fisher and the other coaches, learning the system, gaining confidence, and building chemistry with the players around him.

Essentially, if it comes down to an injury or poor quarterback play, A&M has other options at its disposal. The obvious hope is that someone steps up and plays at a high level throughout this season, but there’s no doubt this room has a lot of talent that can get them through this season.
