Texas A&M football has finally named its starting quarterback for 2022; and that’s redshirt sophomore Haynes King. This was a bit expected by anyone following training camp throughout August, but it is now official, as reported by 247sports.com.

King has officially won the job over junior LSU transfer Max Johnson and true freshman and five-star recruit Conner Weigman. Everyone was expecting head coach Jimbo Fisher to announce the starting quarterback at this past Wednesday’s press conference, however, he denied that he was going to announce it when asked.

Haynes King will be the starting quarterback heading into Week 1 against Sam Houston State.

The third-year quarterback has been having a strong camp so far and has seemingly improved a lot over the year. Johnson also had a good camp, but King’s physical traits and progression most likely helped win him the job. Weigman showed some good things in camp as well, but he wasn’t seen as a very serious candidate because of his inexperience. However, coach Fisher confirmed that he was looking at everyone in the room for the QB1 gig.

Haynes King possesses a good knowledge of the system and playbook under coach Fisher, so it was an uphill battle for everyone else from the start. Johnson provides a good floor, but King has more upside due to his physical ability; his ability to extend plays with his legs and his improved arm. Johnson now becomes one of college football’s best backups, and is most certainly the next man up for the job.

This news is something that the team had reportedly been informed of since earlier this week, so the idea that Fisher knew who his starting quarterback was at the press conference is likely. Apparently, the news that King was the starter started to leak on social media on Saturday, so now they make it official Saturday evening.

Now that the news is out, this puts any rumors of quarterback uncertainty in College Station to rest. King won the job outright, and now everyone can focus on the Week 1 matchup against Sam Houston State.
