The Texas A&M football team now has its quarterback situation sorted out, so now we can look ahead to the 2022 season. That starts with a Week 1 matchup against Sam Houston State.

Jimbo Fisher is going into what is likely the most important season of his Texas A&M tenure so far. He has had some big moments, and some underwhelming ones, but now he has a chance to put it all together and make a run at the SEC championship and the College Football Playoffs.

The 2022 season is close, and we can have expectations on how good the Aggies will be this season. Everyone is hoping for a double-digit win season, and that is most certainly the goal. Let’s dive into the schedule that that goal rides on.

This game is a good start for the team to get into regular season mode. Sam Houston State will be entering the FBS in 2023, but they’re nothing to scoff at.

The Bearkats have been an FCS powerhouse for years and are coming off of an 11-1 record in 2021. They put up at least 35 points in all but two contests last season and won’t go down without a fight.

I think the Aggies will still handle the Bearkats fairly easily, but it will be a tougher matchup than some people expect. The back seven should be able to stifle any air attack the Bearkats attempt to launch, and I expect Devon Achane to have a big day against the Sam Houston State defense.

Prediction: Sam Houston State 17,  #6 Texas A&M 45

Appalachian State comes into College Station in Week 2, and the Aggies face another low-tier opponent. The Mountaineers do bring back quite a bit of offensive production, including former Clemson commit, quarterback Chase Brice.

The Mountaineers are coming off of a 10-win season and they are looking to build off of that. They have peeped their head in and out of the AP poll over the past few seasons, so I wouldn’t completely count them out of this game.

I expect this one to be a bit too close for comfort, but I expect Texas A&M to pull out a win at home and move to 2-0. The offense should be able to do enough to outpace the Mountaineers, but the defense may let go a bit more than they would like.

Prediction: Appalachian State 20, #6 Texas A&M 31
