Going into the 2022 season, Texas A&M football, as a team, is coming in with high expectations from the national media. Although the media highlights the stars in College Station, there are still a few players flying under the radar.

These will be the players that help the team take that next step. Yes, there’s the bona fide stars of the team such as Antonio Johnson or Devon Achane, but there are some other guys on this roster not getting the (positive) attention they should be getting.

Starting in the defensive back room, I will be highlighting these players that should be getting more attention. These players will be playing big roles on this team and will help unlock their potential to garnering College Football Playoff consideration.

1. CB Jaylon Jones

Defensive back Jaylon Jones, before the spring, wasn’t even expected to crack the starting lineup. However, now in September, Jones is expected to be named one of the outside starters along with either Brian George or Tyreek Chappell.

In case you’ve forgotten, Jones was actually a five-star recruit coming into College Station. He started all 12 games last season and had a pretty up-and-down season. Now, going into his junior year, he should be making a big jump to stardom.

Jones has the size, strength, and ball skills to be a top corner in the SEC. He has all the tools, he just needs to put it all together. He’s shown flashes, such as the Auburn game last season. He’s one of, if not the, best run defending corners on the team, and I expect him to improve in his coverage skills after an offseason of work.

In 2022, I see Jones taking a leap to stardom. He has all the makings of a true No. 1 cornerback and he has the chance to take that label this season. Fans need to keep an eye on him throughout the season as he has an opportunity to not just become a superstar, but a prime NFL Draft candidate.
