Offense preview

After just one game, we can already say one thing is for certain: the Mountaineer offense is the real deal. That offense is led by fifth-year senior Chase Brice. Brice was formally of Clemson football before transferring to Duke for a season. After an unimpressive season there, Brice then transferred to Appalachian State before the 2021 season.

He put up great numbers last season, finishing with over 3300 yards and 27 touchdowns. In Week 1, Brice continued his success, having 361 passing yards and six touchdowns against the Tar Heels.

Not only is the passing game really good, but the running game looked great on Saturday as well. The running back group is led by sophomore running back Nate Noel. Noel enjoyed a great 2021 season, finishing with over 1100 yards from scrimmage and four touchdowns on 5.7 yards per carry. In Week 1, the 5’10 back ran for 116 yards and two touchdowns on just 14 attempts. RB2 Camerun Peoples also played well, receiving 13 carries for 65 yards and a touchdown.

The offense certainly likes to spread the ball around, after 12 different players recorded at least one reception in the opening matchup. The leading receiver was sophomore Dashaun Davis, who finished with six catches for 72 yards and a touchdown and also had a carry for 20 yards.

The Mountaineer offensive line looked great. All night, they didn’t allow a single sack and nine pressures on 47 dropbacks. They did account for five penalties, but overall, they did a good job of opening holes for their running backs and keeping their QB upright.
