Texas A&M football will be dealing with a porous Mountaineer defense

There’s been a lot of talk about App State’s record-setting 40-point 4th quarter, and, because of that, some worry about whether the Aggies will be able to keep up after only mustering 31 points against FCS Sam Houston State. What’s overlooked here, however, is that, despite the massive scoring number in that period, the Mountaineers still lost after giving up 63 to a UNC offense that wasn’t even at full strength after star receiver Josh Downs was unable to play.

I doubt we’ll be seeing the same kind of slow start we witnessed against the Bearkats come Saturday at 2:30 – give me the Aggies to put up an even higher number against App than they did against SHSU, especially if they can limit turnovers. An underdiscussed factor of that 31-point output was the low number of plays run by the Aggies – what with SHSU keeping the tempo slow when they had the ball and running on very late subs on defense to further bleed the play clock, A&M ended the day with only 63 plays run.

I’d be shocked if App took the same tack in that regard.  A score in the 40s wouldn’t surprise me at all, and I think the Aggies could get to 50 once all is said and done.
