Offensive improvement is imperative

Texas A&M scored on their first drive of the 3rd quarter to make the margin 17-3 over Miami, and, from there, failed to score again. They put up 264 total yards on 52 plays. The QB play definitely looked improved from last week, as did the OL play with the return of Bryce Foster, and the two suspended receivers were sorely missed, but this offense simply must put up better numbers going forward.

It felt for much of the night like the only ones able to make plays were Ainias Smith and Achane. Getting Stewart back will be a huge boon to the Aggie receiving corps, and we’re all excited to see what he can do with the ball in his hands, but Yulkeith Brown, Chase Lane, and others will have to continue to step up.

Chris Marshall has shown flashes as well. Imperative to the ability to make plays down the field, however, is improved pass protection up front.  We saw the beginnings of that against a talented Miami front, but the line is still not yet at the level that they need to be.

And where is the tight end? Donovan Green registered one catch for 18 yards on the first drive for his only target of the game. The TE position has been a featured one in the first 4 years of Jimbo’s tenure here at A&M and has proven vital in big games. Whether it’s due to youth and inexperience or play calling, something has to change there for this offense to reach its full potential.
