If there was ever a time that a ranked team coming off of an ugly loss to an unranked opponent needed a win, it was this weekend for Texas A&M football. The loss to the Mountaineers put a major hurdle in front of the Aggies’ hopes of making the College Football Playoff, but didn’t knock them out of the running by any means. They needed to get a win against a ranked opponent and the #13 Miami Hurricanes were the first team up this week and the Aggies were up to the challenge.

This was a defensive battle throughout the game and one where the Aggies made the decision to start Max Johnson over Haynes King, and while it wasn’t the greatest showing from a quarterback, Johnson got the job done as the Aggies were able to beat the Hurricanes 17-9. With that being said, let us take a look at how Texas A&M did in all phases of the game with this week’s Aggie grades.

Offense

While the Aggies’ offense wasn’t clicking on all cylinders, they were more efficient in this game against the Hurricanes than they were against the Mountaineers last week. Led by former LSU quarterback Max Johnson, this week the Aggies’ offense through the air was more effective with Johnson throwing for 140 yards compared to King’s 97 yards last week.

The running game was also doing enough to move the chains with running back Devon Achane rushing for 88 yards and averaging 4.9 yards per carry on the day with LJ Johnson Jr. getting the team’s sole rushing touchdown.

Ainias Smith led the Aggies in receiving yards with 74 yards, but it was once again Achane who was able to find the endzone through the air. Overall, this was a nice bounce-back game for the Aggies who needed to get a win over a ranked team under their belts for the playoff hopes, but more for their confidence in themselves with the long road of tougher opponents in front of them.
