First reported by ESPN’s Ian Fitzsimmons, it appears as though Max Johnson, QB for the Texas A&M Football team, is going to miss quite a bit of time after an injury at Mississippi State.

Midway through the 4th quarter, Johnson was throwing the ball when his hand made contact with another player’s hand.  Shortly afterwards, he took himself out of the game and, on the sideline, appeared unable to grip the ball with enough force.  Haynes King finished the game at QB, leading two touchdown drives but also throwing two interceptions.

Johnson’s status earlier in the week was up in the air, but most fans assumed King would be getting the start in Tuscaloosa this weekend against the Alabama Crimson Tide.  Word has started to trickle out, however, that we may see 5-star phenom Connor Weigman behind center for at least a few snaps this weekend.

Many of the Aggie faithful have been calling for Weigman ever since the loss to App State.  This would be a move that fits in with much of how the season has gone thus far; due to injuries across the board, many of the heralded 2020 signing class have had to step into action sooner than expected.

No matter which signal caller takes the field against the Tide, however, the Texas A&M Football team will miss Johnson’s presence on the field.  Max was a steadying force in the three games he played, bringing balance and game management to an offense that was— and, in spots, still is— out of sorts.  Perhaps the offensive line being a bit more shored up will contribute to a better performance from King this time around, or maybe Weigman will step in and dazzle us as many expect.  One way or another, the QB situation just got a lot more interesting.
