Conner Weigman should be given the reins of this Texas A&M football team

Near the beginning of the 4th quarter, Haynes King ran to the sideline with an apparent shoulder injury.  This led to Jimbo Fisher inserting freshman quarterback Conner Weigman, who played for the remainder of the game.  His final statline wasn’t necessarily remarkable— 8/15 for 91 yards and a 6.1 YPA— but his arm talent jumped off the screen.

There were moments that he would shortarm some throws, but his passes down the seam, especially on the final drive, were noticeably different than anything we’ve seen from King or Johnson this year.  It was immediately obvious why he garnered the acclaim he did as a high school prospect.

I don’t make this suggestion lightly.  I also don’t make it just because I don’t think we can win with Haynes King; in fact, I think he, apart from the first interception, had a good game throwing the ball on Saturday.  I think it’s the right move because, at this point, the Aggies need to be future-focused.  No matter whether we win out or not, this season has already been chalked up as a disappointment to any fair observer of the program given how things have transpired.  This Texas A&M football team needs a reason to believe, and Weigman is the future of this program.  Get him in there, get him some experience so he’s not so green next year, and let him do his thing.
