The first college football Saturday of the year is finally here, and the fine folks at SEC Nation were live this morning breaking down all manner of programs across the league—including Texas A&M football. A lively discussion of the Aggies, Jimbo, and the offense for the Maroon and White broke out this morning on the program, with the hosts offering a variety of takes on how 2023 might look for the Ags.

Tim Tebow started off by mentioning how he believes in Texas A&M football this season, saying that Aggie fans should be excited and that, in his opinion, Bobby Petrino is a top ten play caller in all of college football. He continued, saying that Petrino knows how to put QBs in good situations, and that while it might be hard for Jimbo to fully hand over the reins, it is ultimately the right decision for the program. He praised the skill talent around the new starter at QB for Texas A&M football, Conner Weigman, and said that if the Aggies get momentum going, they could make a turnaround.

Jordan Rodgers largely agreed with Tebow, but made a point he has been hammering for almost the last two years: the offense itself as far as play design wasn’t the issue; rather, it was the presentation. He rattled off how little Jimbo’s offense used presnap motion and shifts, saying that such a strategy really helps modern offenses. He closed by saying that the Ags have one of the deepest receiving corps in the whole country and that the Aggies only lost two starters off of last year’s team.

Roman Harper was up next, and what he lacked in fact-based analysis, he made up for in bloviating pessimism. He went back to the incorrect talking point that Jimbo has never said that Petrino will be calling the plays, and said he doesn’t believe Texas A&M football has what it takes to be good this year. Rodgers challenged Harper on this, saying that if you add one touchdown per game to the 2022 Aggie offense, that would have made them 10-2 while only being the 9th best offense in the league. If Petrino can make the Aggies even an average offense, Rodgers said, they’re a ten-win team last year even with all that youth. Harper’s response just about amounted to a “well, I don’t know about all that.”

Paul Finebaum was the last to chime in. He criticized Jimbo, saying that Fisher had to make the change at OC after the disaster this past year’s offense was. He went on to praise Petrino, saying that it was a great hire and there was no doubt that Bobby would be calling the plays, but said that if Jimbo ever decided to take charge, that would be his prerogative as HC.

As you’d expect, there was a variety of opinions on Texas A&M football this morning. With kickoff under 8 hours away, talking season is almost over, however. It’s almost time to put up or shut up—and this Aggie team can finally silence the doubters.
