Matchup History: Texas A&M Football and ULM

Texas A&M is set to play the University of Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday, September 16th. The teams have played each other 4 times in the past, so how have the two teams fared in those games?

Texas A&M has won all 4 meetings between the 2 teams with a combined score of 154-57. The series started in 1985, where the Aggies won 31-17 under head coach Jackie Sherril. The Aggies had lost to 20th ranked Alabama the week before they played ULM, known as Northeast Louisiana at the time. Texas A&M then went on to win the southwest conference with a 10-2 record, finishing at 6th in the country.

The Aggies didn’t meet the Warhawks again until 2007, where the Aggies won 54-14 behind quarterback Stephen McGee. McGee threw for 237 yards, with 1 touchdown and 1 interception, and the team rushed for 6 touchdowns on the ground. The defense also held their own, allowing only 2 touchdowns, both on the ground, with 2 interceptions through the air. The Aggies would go on to finish the year 7-6, and the Warhawks would finish 6-6.

In 2014, the two teams met again in a close battle that resulted in an Aggie victory, with a final score of 21-16. The Aggies had a rough day under head coach Kevin Sumlin, only earning 242 total yards behind true freshmen Kyle Allen. The Aggies scored 21 points in the first half, but struggled to move the ball after halftime. The Aggie defense however, held their own. Armani Watts intercepted Warhawk quarterback Pete Thomas early in the game, and the defense only allowed 1 touchdown throughout the game. The Aggies would finish the season 8-5 and the Warhawks would finish the season 4-8.

The most recent matchup between Texas A&M football and ULM was during a 48-10 Aggie victory in 2018. This was the first year of the Jimbo Fisher era in Aggieland, and the Kellen Mond Aggies had no trouble. Mond threw for 210 yards and 1 touchdown while rushing for 2 more, and was accompanied by running back Trayveon Williams who ran for 128 yards and a touchdown. ULM was held to 1 touchdown on the day, despite throwing for 225 yards.  The Warhawks never found their footing. The Aggies would finish the year with a 9-4 season, 2nd in the SEC West, and the Warhawks finished 6-6.

Texas A&M football will meet ULM for the 5th time this weekend and should follow past trends and dominate the Warhawks. After a rough week against Miami, ULM should be a good bounce back game for a defense that has lost some of its momentum. Expect the Aggies to follow tradition and improve to a 5-0 all time record against the Warhawks.
