Texas A&M Football Dominates ULM, 47-3

This was a much-needed win. Not only that the Aggies recorded one in the positive column, but the way in which it happened.

There were some early issues with the defense, but they really got things together in the second half. Sound tackling and coverage showed up once more for the Aggies after abandoning them last week—albeit against a much more difficult opponent than ULM.

There are still things that need work, for sure. Chief among them the protections—though Weigman once again did not take a sack in this game. He just has that ability to avoid pressure and still put the ball in the perfect spot for his receiver. He is so, so good—with a QB and receivers like that, you have a shot in any game on the schedule. Even without his top two targets today in Thomas and Stewart, Weigman delivered another dazzling performance.

The pass catchers who stepped up recorded some great performances, as well. Both Ainias Smith and Jahdae Walker had over 100 yards receiving in the first half. It was refreshing to see the run game get things going as well—especially the long touchdown run by Rueben Owens.

Even though there were a few issues in the first half, the defense overall had a great day. The Warhawks were 1-12 on third down on the day (with the only conversion coming late into the fourth quarter, when things were well in hand), and were held under 200 total yards until garbage time had long been in effect. I said multiple times that this was a chance for this Texas A&M football squad to build some confidence on the defensive end of things, and it looks like they’re doing just that.

You won’t get praise for a performance like this, but I am once again encouraged by a lot of things I’m seeing out of the Aggies here. Texas A&M football dominated in a way they haven’t often done against lesser opponents under Jimbo. The tuneup is over now, though. Conference play begins next week. We’ll soon enough find out what this Aggie team is really made of.
