Coach Lee Corso Gets Emotional Reflecting On His Headgear Tradition

Perhaps the most iconic thing about every college football Saturday is the headgear pick by Lee Corso to cap off College Gameday. The excitement by the crowd when he picks their team, and, conversely, the reaction when he picks the visitor are always a fun time headed into the first game of the day.

College Gameday, today in Boulder for Colorado-Colorado State, is celebrating Lee Corso today, as this Saturday marks his four hundredth headgear pick of his career. College Gameday put together a piece highlighting some of his picks over the years, which you can watch below.

What a journey it has been with Lee Corso over the years! Even before I knew anything about college football, I knew about the guy on TV every fall Saturday who put the mascot heads on. This tradition has truly become a cultural force that transcends only the people who watch college football.

After this feature, the crowd began cheering for coach Corso as he collected himself to give a statement. You can watch that in these tweets:

Who’s cutting onions this Saturday morning?

On a serious note, although I’ve personally watched College Gameday less often in recent years, the headgear pick is something I always tune in for. As I said, this is really something that goes beyond just the people who watch CFB week in and week out, and a great tradition that only Lee Corso can pull off. As Rece Davis said at the end of the last segment there on the show—here’s to five hundred, coach!
