Conner Weigman Lights It Up for Texas A&M Football

I didn’t intend the weekly player spotlight to be about the same guy each of the first three weeks, but Weigman has simply been so amazing through these first few games that it’s hard to pick anyone else at this juncture. The man has only played one full game out of the three possible, due to blowing out both ULM and New Mexico, and yet is still tied for 14th in the nation in raw number of touchdown passes and is 14th alone for total passing yards at 909. In the SEC specifically, he is also standing out; he currently is 3rd in passing yards per game (again, despite only playing one full game so far); tied for 2nd in touchdown passes per game; and leads the pack by a healthy margin in QBR.

The competitive attitude combined with the pure passing prowess from Weigman is a deadly combination. I really can’t remember another signal caller for Texas A&M football with that kind of blend since Johnny Football was wearing #2—and even then, Weigman’s pocket presence and ability as a pure thrower probably surpasses even Johnny’s.

Let’s take a look at what the sophomore did for Texas A&M football versus ULM. Here’s his line:

  • 25/29
  • 337 yards
  • 11.6 YPA
  • 1 Passing TD, 1 Rushing TD, 0 INTs
  • 96.9 QBR

This 25/29 mark is the best mark for completion percentage in the SEC era for the Aggies. It was near the best in the whole history of Texas A&M football, as a matter of fact!

There are those who will continue to doubt Conner until he lead the Aggies to a signature victory. There are those who will continue to doubt him even beyond when that happens. But if you’re not on the hype train yet… get on it. I’m really struggling to find a weakness in his game—he had a couple of bad slide protection calls against Miami last week, but that’s something that will come with experience for the young man. Physically, he can do it all.

Maybe one of these upcoming weeks I’ll highlight someone different after the game. But today is not that day.
