Former Heisman winner for Texas A&M football offers high praise for Weigman

Texas A&M football legend Johnny Manziel was in the building for the Aggies’ decisive win over ULM on Saturday. In the middle of the third quarter, the SEC Network sideline reporter, Taylor Davis, was able to track him down for a few words on being back in College Station and the current signal caller for the Maroon and White, Conner Weigman. Here’s what Johnny Football had to say:

There’s a sense in which I think Texas A&M football should move past Johnny—when the Aggies really have this thing rolling, there will be less of a feeling of “the good ole days” of 2012 and 2013. I’m ready for those bright days that are surely ahead with the way this Texas A&M football team is playing right now.

That said… I think there’s something to this comparison. Now look, Conner is obviously not as elusive as Johnny, though he does have that element to his game. Conversely, I don’t think Johnny had the pocket presence and ability to deliver under pressure that Weigman brings to the table—the guy just purely cannot be rattled. But the ability to produce as a result of his own prowess as opposed to a friendly system, the competitive spirit, and that “it” factor that Weigman has are all things that we haven’t seen in College Station since the days of #2 in Maroon flummoxing the league’s best defenses week in and week out. Conner still yet has much to prove; we are only three games into this, his second season. But he continues to play at a high level, and, if you see him continue this level of play into the conference slate, I’m not so sure this isn’t a comparison we’ll be hearing a lot more in the days ahead.

Next. 3 takeaways from a dominant win over ULM. dark
