5 Bold Takes as Texas A&M Football Begins Conference Play

I’ve said it a lot this week: this is a huge one for Texas A&M football. The way the narrative shifts with a win versus a loss is dramatic, and for the Aggies to achieve their goals, they need to come out of this one at 3-1; preferably with an emphatically superior performance. Let’s jump into some bold predictions.

Aggie Defense Generates a Turnover
Through three games of the 2023 season, the defense has only turned their opponent over one time, when Josh DeBerry picked off New Mexico. There was another turnover in the Miami game, when the Hurricanes muffed a punt, but that was a special teams play, even if it was Cooper who recovered. I think Thorne makes poor decisions when pressured, so if the Aggie DL can get home against the Auburn front, I’d wager we see one of the A&M DBs make a play on the ball.

Conner Weigman Throws and Runs for 4+ TDs
Not going to go find this, but there was an Auburn fan on X (formerly Twitter) last week commenting about how dearly he hopes that Weigman is the QB when the Tigers come to town, since “he’s not a good quarterback.” I can only assume he’s judging solely off of last year’s road contest at Auburn and has seen none of A&M’s games since then, but that guy—whoever he is—is about to get much more than he bargained for. Some may come through the air, some may come on the ground, but I think Weigman will have a big day on Saturday.

Texas A&M Football Exceeds 5 YPC
This is really a bold prediction, as not even against ULM did the Aggies hit this mark. I’m not sure how successful the Aggies will be down in and down out against this Auburn defense, but I think we’ll see a couple of backs break off some big gains to help out the Aggie average.

Tigers Held Below 3 YPC
This one is a bit of a technicality, as I expect the Aggies to be able to get home with decent success against Thorne. Though the Auburn QB has one of the highest rushing averages on the team, he is not good at avoiding sacks. Shemar Turner, who leads the Aggies with 3 sacks already, may add to that total, and I think the Aggie front will generally hold up well against this senior Auburn line.

Texas A&M Football Wins By 2+ Scores
This one has the potential to be close at half, but I think the Aggies should and will pull away in the second half. I just don’t think Auburn has the horses to compete in this one, though I like a lot of their individual players. Though they have skilled DBs, I don’t think they have guys who can match up one-on-one with the wideout talent that Texas A&M football has. Getting them out of their preferred defensive approach will open up even more opportunities for the Aggies, and I see them being able to salt this one away in the late third or early fourth quarters.
