QB depth for Texas A&M football is encouraging

When I saw Conner Weigman go down, I—unlike Jimbo, according to his press conference—started to have a sinking feeling. I recalled Johnson’s QB play as somewhat above average from his short few starts last season, but had not been extremely encouraged with what he had put out on the field thus far this year. It certainly felt to me like Weigman’s acumen thus far in the year was what was putting the offense over the top.

To be clear—I still believe that’s the case. Weigman’s consummate talent has been obvious to any viewer of this Texas A&M football squad so far this year—the first part of this game notwithstanding. His calm under pressure, impeccable ball placement, and leadership qualities have shone through and lifted the Aggie offense from the depths of 2022.

That said… Max Johnson ain’t too bad.

The way he came out and started confidently not only making the right throws but the right checks and protection calls was great to see. His command was clear, displaying over and over why he was such a productive starter in this league.

Let’s be clear: Conner is this team’s starter when healthy. There’s no question of that.

But Johnson has got to be just about the best backup in the league.
