Takeaways from Initial CFP Rankings for Texas A&M Football

Texas A&M football may not have found themselves in the initial CFP Rankings, but there are still relevant takeaways for the Maroon and White faithful. Firstly, as should be no surprise to Aggie fans, the game this weekend vs. Ole Miss is shaping up to be a chance at a top-10 win on the road, as the Rebels notch the 10 spot overall in the CFP. Ole Miss is 7-1, with their only loss being to the 8th-ranked Crimson Tide of Alabama, and featuring a top win themselves over LSU. That latter win was a memorable shootout, and will bolster the Rebels’ case for a high spot right up until the end of the season.

Mississippi State, the next opponent for Texas A&M football following the showdown with the Rebs, is of course unranked. The Bulldogs sit at 4-4 following a loss to Auburn, and have a tough road ahead to bowl eligibility. It is extremely unlikely even a win this weekend would vault them into a top-25 spot ahead of their matchup with the Aggies.

Then comes LSU. The Tigers sit at 14th overall in the initial CFP rankings. They currently feature a 6-2 record ahead of their matchup with the Crimson Tide, with losses to the aforementioned Ole Miss as well as Florida State. The Bayou Bengals will likely remain in the rankings, whatever the outcome is in Tuscaloosa this week, as they have a ranked win in Missouri (12th). That means that, in all likelihood, the Tigers will be somewhere in the teens when the Aggies roll into town.

Pending how the game between Texas A&M football and Ole Miss goes, the Aggies themselves could have a case to be in the rankings come next week. They certainly have two quality losses in Alabama and Tennessee (Miami does not appear on the list) and would also have a great win at that point, sitting at 6-3. That’s a tall order, but after everything Texas A&M football has been through over the past few weeks, that this is still within reach is kind of a crazy thought. Whether they can actually accomplish it is another matter entirely.
