Jimbo Fisher Dismissed Early Sunday Morning

In a move speculated about by many but with timing anticipated by few, Texas A&M has made the decision to part ways with head coach Jimbo Fisher. Fisher compiled a record of 45-25 in his nearly six seasons as the head coach of the Aggies.

Per Billy Liucci of Texags, this decision came to the fore at the Board of Regents meeting this past Thursday. Fisher’s tenure has been marked in the past three years by a sense of underachievement in the win column relative to the massive amounts of talent he was able to accrue in College Station.

Just as some quick reaction and editorializing here, I am personally quite shocked by the timing. If this had taken place after the season, I would not have thought it was as strange as I do now; yet I also understand that the Board of Regents had likely reached this conclusion regardless of how the game against Mississippi State turned out. As things stand, the optics are a bit strange—you notch one of the most dominant conference wins you’ve had in quite some time, and then you fire the coach—but in the big picture, this victory over State didn’t change too much. This was a case of too little too late when it came to that.

My sense is that the board have a target to replace Jimbo Fisher already, adding to the decision to move on within this timeframe. I’m not quite sure who that target is, though I have a few guesses. We will keep everything up to the minute here on the site, so check back early and often for updates and reactions to this massive news.
