Report Names Top Candidates for Texas A&M Football Job

As soon as the word came down that Texas A&M football would be moving on from Jimbo Fisher, the wheels began to turn quickly in my head, as I’m sure is the case for every Texas A&M football fan, or even college football fan in general. What about the rest of the season? Who will the interim be? How will the roster look? And of course the biggest question: who will the next coach be? I’ve ventured a couple of names of my own here in recent weeks, but now that things are official, a report has come out with some of the top names to keep an eye on with regard to this opening.

Lots of names line up with my personal wish list here. The names I would avoid on this list, personally speaking, are Lane Kiffin, Jeff Traylor, Kliff Kingsbury, and Mike Norvell. Kiffin would not fit culturally as the Texas A&M football head coach, however much he might desire to coach at a school like this. Plus, philosophically speaking, I don’t believe in his ability to win at the highest level. I think he can succeed as an OC, but not as a head coach. Traylor, as I stated in my article last week, is a good coach for the lower levels but I have questions about his ability to make that next step. Kingsbury has gotten lots of chances and shown in each instance that he is not the guy to manage a team. Norvell would feel like a strange retread, going back to the well at FSU after everything that happened with Fisher. I don’t doubt the ability of Texas A&M football to attract any of these names, but my personal favorite is Lanning.

We’ve got a huge couple of weeks coming up, Aggie fans. Buckle up.
