Bad Idea for Texas A&M Football: Lane Kiffin
Color me confused as to why this is a name that keeps coming up for this vacancy. Actually, that may be not quite accurate—it seems manifestly evident why this name keeps coming up, and that is because Kiffin, first, clearly wants this job, and second, is represented by Jimmy Sexton. I am personally of the opinion that Kiffin would proverbially saw his own arm off for this position, which is a contributing factor to why he would go so hard at Jimbo—he thought that Fisher was way underachieving and that he could do a far better job. He was envious of the opportunity that Jimbo had and frustrated that a guy he considered beneath him when it comes to coaching acumen was given that opportunity rather than himself. That’s my personal theory, anyway!
That said, Kiffin is not under consideration for this job. I have no inside sources on this, but a man who does have inside sources has said pretty certainly that the powers at A&M are not going to give Kiffin a call here. Kiffin has pretty decisively reached his ceiling, in my opinion. His scheme and philosophy, while they help even the playing field in certain instances, don’t seem to scale well. He’s 9-3 and 10-2 and that’s about as good as he’ll be. He also, by all accounts, doesn’t seem to be the type of personality that would be a good fit here at Texas A&M football, and has apparently made quite a few enemies with some of his rhetoric in the media and behind the scenes—at least, that’s the word on that kind of thing.
