Texas A&M Football: Is Jimbo Fisher the Worst Head Coaching Hire Ever?
Where does Jimbo Fisher Rank in Worst HC Hires for Texas A&M Football?
Not to make a practice of answering my headline right in the first line of every story, but no, I do not believe that Jimbo Fisher is one of the worst hires Texas A&M football has ever made as head coach. The only way I think you could come to that conclusion is if your criteria are contract value and overall win-loss record weighed against one another. I would consider that overly simplistic—there are more things that a head coach does that need to be factored in, even if winning percentage at the end of the day becomes the most important factor—which it does, without a doubt. That’s why Fisher ended up being ousted, after all.
Here’s an abbreviated, subjective list of things that I think Jimbo brought to Texas A&M football that would remove him from being on this list:
- Top tier recruiting, including the highest-ranked class of all time
- National attention and fascination
- A home win over AP #1
- A home win over AP #4
- A home win over AP #5
- One of the most memorable games in college football history
Even if Jimbo failed to capitalize on so many of the things available to him as head coach of Texas A&M football, he also built the program up in many ways. I feel a lot better right now about the state of things as regards the Aggies than I did in late 2017. He didn’t reach his ultimate goal—the closest he ever came was being the first team out of the playoff in 2020. However, you can’t say that he didn’t accomplish anything.
So all that said, who are the worst head coaches in Texas A&M football history? Let’s take a look.
