Texas A&M Football Job Drawing Huge Level of National Interest

Despite what many opposing fans have been saying online since Jimbo was dismissed, we have learned very quickly just how highly this position is regarded by coaches around the nation. Billy Liucci of Texags has mentioned that there is an “incredible interest” in the job, and Josh Pate has repeatedly referenced how many big names he has heard connected with the opening (including a cryptic reference to coaches from “all four corners” of the nation inquiring about the job).

So what names have been floated? Again, these are all rumors, but one name that has been often mentioned is Dabo Swinney. I’ve made my thoughts clear on that possibility—it feels like a situation all too similar to Jimbo himself at the time he left Florida State—but imagine if the Aggies pulled back-to-back sitting head coaches who have won national championships at their current school. Another name popular on the message boards right now, and a name that Liucci mentioned specifically, is that of Ohio State head coach Ryan Day. Now that’s a name that would shake up the national conversation and then some if things started to accelerate there. Day looks to be facing a certain amount of pressure from donors and fans due to two straight losses to Michigan as well as a lack of national titles thus far, even though he has compiled an insanely high winning percentage overall in his tenure at Ohio State.

Regardless of whether a guy like Day or someone of his ilk ends up taking the job as head man for Texas A&M football, the amount of interest this opening has generated is encouraging and vindicating for Aggie fans and supporters. The amount of resources this program has put into building a championship-level football team has rocketed Texas A&M into the conversation of one of the best jobs in the nation—a spot that Aggie fans have always known the job should be in. Here’s hoping that the next guy to take up the mantle of A&M coach is the one who can finally lead the program to the heights of which the fans have always dreamt.
