C Tier Hires for Texas A&M Football

One of these candidates has been all but completely dismissed as an option, and the other is a bit of a long shot, but if a course reversal happened on either, feel free to refer back here!

Matt Rhule: Once the hottest name in coaching, Rhule has certainly lost some of his luster after an abject failure at what is admittedly a tough job up in Carolina. He’s now back to the college ranks, hoping to continue in his reputation as a program resurrection specialist up in Lincoln, NE. At both Baylor and Temple, his teams bottomed out in their first year before becoming extremely formidable in their third. However, neither place got over the hump with him fully.

You obviously have the connections between Rhule and Elijah Robinson as a mark in his favor. But I’m not sure his style or recruiting ability would be the best fit as the head coach of Texas A&M football. The Aggies are hoping to be in immediate contention given the current state of the roster, and I’m not sure a guy who is known for tearing things down to the studs and rebuilding them is the right fit for that.

Georgia Co-Defensive Glenn Schumann speaks to the media about the start of the season in Athens, Ga., on Tuesday, Aug 8, 2023. /

Glenn Schumann: Now, this may be blasphemy to some Texas A&M football fans, but the risk that comes with this hire is just too great for me to place Schumann any higher. I would have a lot of excitement and a lot of trepidation at the same time—he’s just such an unknown outside of his recruiting ability. You have a couple of recruits saying that he knows a lot about linebackers and secondhand reporting that Saban and Smart think he’s a bright guy, but other than that, it’s hard to know if Schumann is really currently the brains behind this Bulldog defense when he’s under Smart and Muschamp.

Don’t get me wrong, if he ended up being the guy (which insiders seem to really, really doubt), this could go really well. But I just think there’s too much risk to be comfortable here.
