Texas A&M Football OC Candidates: Mack Leftwich, Texas State

This is another one that I wrote about in my staffing article earlier this week. Leftwich came up to San Marcos in an OC role along with young phenom GJ Kinne, after the two had coordinated one of the top offenses in the FCS down at the University of the Incarnate Word previously. They’re rising in the ranks extremely quickly, as Kinne is already having his name mentioned for places like Baylor and Houston. The secret sauce for the offense, though, might belong to Leftwich himself.

He’s overseen an offense that has been not only one of the best in the group of 5, but one of the best in the country. He took them from 118th in YPA in 2022 to 22nd this year behind the arm of TJ Finley. Yes, that TJ Finley. He runs an uptempo scheme, reminiscent of Heupel at Tennessee, that spreads out the defense and pushes the ball downfield yet doesn’t abandon the run game.

The question here is whether Leftwich would part ways with Kinne, who—as I said—is rising fast. They may want to stick together for the time being. It also may be Elko’s opinion that Leftwich is too unproven, and that the Aggies need more of a home-run hire to get things moving quickly in College Station with the massive talent on campus. In that vein, let’s check out the last two options.
