Texas A&M Football Hires Elite Recruiter as DL Coach in Sean Spencer
Only hours after Texas A&M football received the news of Elijah Robinson’s departure, the Aggies have made a hire to replace him. Mike Elko has tabbed Sean Spencer, most recently of Florida, to his staff to coach defensive line.
Reportedly, Elko had originally pursued Spencer to be part of his initial Duke staff, but was outbid by Florida. Billy Napier eventually dismissed Spencer amid turmoil down in Gainesville as a scapegoat for some of the issues their defense has had this year. Spencer brings with him a strong reputation, however, having been a key piece of James Franklin’s staff in State College before eventually being hired by the Giants.
It’s important to note that Spencer has been one of the lead recruiters for a Florida class that includes more than one top defensive line prospect—and that current Texas A&M football pledge Dealyn Evans has been vacillating between the Aggies and Florida in recent months. Hopefully this hire sews up the latter and can help the Aggies with some of the former.
This was a hire that the Aggies had to make relatively quickly. Since Elijah Robinson was announced to be departing for Syracuse, they have lost one of their recruits to decommitment and been told one of their best lineman is entering the portal. Whether Spencer can reverse those decisions has yet to be seen, but he’s definitely a coach in the mold of the guy who is leaving. Spencer will have to get to work quickly, as the portal action promises to start kicking up sooner rather than later.
