Following Portal Rumors, Star Wideout for Texas A&M Football Appears Locked In with Aggies

To the chagrin of rivals both local and far-flung, it is looking more and more likely that star receiver Evan Stewart will remain with Texas A&M football going forward. I wrote last month about a prognostication giddily made by the moderator of a Texas Longhorns recruiting site that Stewart would not play again in the 2023 season and was portal-bound. Of course, ever since the portal opened, Aggie players have been able to enter. Several already have (notably, though, despite an announcement that he would be, Walter Nolen has yet to officially go in). Evan, though, has made no announcement and has not entered his name.

In the midst of an online dust-up yesterday over a comment he left on Instagram, Evan was somewhat more active on Twitter than he normally is while trying to clear the air about a comment he had made. Several of the things he sent out certainly seemed to intimate that he has every intention of remaining with the Aggies; most notably, this tweet:

This, along with the fact that he was essentially going to bat for the program in the face of misrepresentation by On3 and other outlets, have to be encouraging for a fanbase that seemed all too certain that he was entering the portal for the past few weeks. The fact remains that he has not gone to the portal, even though he has had the ability to do so.

All that said, I don’t believe the Aggies are out of the woods yet here. Mike Elko still has to hire an offensive coordinator for Texas A&M football, and while I trust him to make a high-level hire, I think there is a lot riding on it—especially as regards Evan’s status going forward. I think he’s in a bit of a wait-and-see mode, just as several guys on the roster are. If I’m Elko, then, I’d feel an urgency to make these hires final as soon as possible, as that wait-and-see status will only hold for so long while the roster is under a barrage of calls to transfer out. During this period of uncertainty, that is doubtless what is taking place from the top of the Texas A&M football team to the bottom.
