Texas A&M Football Makes Recruiting Director Hire

New head coach of Texas A&M football Mike Elko isn’t wasting any time. The man has been all over the state recently, visiting high school coaches, sitting down with key recruits, as well as visiting with the roster currently on campus to make sure guys are locked in. In the midst of all these things, he’s also been assembling a staff—and it looks like another key piece of that staff has now fallen into place.

The Aggies are hiring Derek Miller from Duke University as Director of Personnel/General Manager, according to Ryan Brauninger on Texags. AggiesToday on Twitter was the first to report the hire.

Miller has SEC connections, having worked at LSU from 2017 to 2018 as the Assistant Director of Player Personnel (Football). From there, he moved to the head job in this department at Bowling Green, then East Carolina, and most recently Duke, where he obviously worked with Mike Elko. Elko apparently liked him enough to bring him over.

I like the fact that his role is titled general manager—it’s forward thinking and aimed at not only the high school recruiting world, but the transfer portal and guys currently on campus as well. With the advent of these new frontiers (which could be seeing even more change soon) you want some young blood in that role: a guy who is adaptable and forward-thinking. That’s what I’m sensing here with this hire.

Insiders have given early positive reviews of Miller. He appears to be a rising star in the industry. In the immediate future, having this hire in place will take the burden off of Elko, who’s had to be a one-man show these past few weeks. I continue to be encouraged by his instincts and hires, and can’t wait to see who’s next up to take a role at Texas A&M football.
