Texas A&M’s 2027 recruiting class is already one of the best that the sport has seen in years, and it has a chance to get even better if things break right for them over the next few days. However, as Aggie fans have learned after what we saw in 2022 and following, it also matters a heck of a lot how you follow up one great class.
Luckily for Texas A&M fans, the Aggies are hard at work already in the 2028 cycle, having already landed the top player in Louisiana (Chance Archangel). They are also trending for one of the best passers in the 2028 class in Donald Tabron, who could be the quarterback that eventually leads the Aggies to the national championship.
Point being, the Aggies are looking to make some waves in 2028 as well as 2027, but one of their top prospects for that cycle just put a bit of a damper on things. A’mir Sears, the top corner in the country for 2028, just shocked everyone by announcing his upcoming reclassification and commitment— and the Aggies may be on the outside looking in.

Sears, like Mark Matthews, is a five-star prospect that is from the Miami area. And just like Matthews, the Aggies were locked in a battle with the hometown Hurricanes in order to pluck that elite talent away and get him to College Station— and they had some momentum to do just that… for a little while.
Recent developments have more favored the Hurricanes than the Aggies in this race, culminating in a huge lead for the ‘Canes in the Recruiting Prediction Machine for Sears. Sometimes, though, when a prospect is entering his junior year, there is one team that seems to have all of the momentum, and they are barely even an afterthought by the time signing day rolls around.

Unfortunately, Sears isn’t just announcing his decision this Friday, July 31– he also intends to reclassify and join the 2027 cycle, where he will no doubt still be a consensus five-star player. Everything is pointing towards Miami right now for Sears, as with such a compressed timeline in this sense, it is unlikely that the Aggies would be the choice.
Sears would have become the fourth five-star defensive back commitment in the Aggies’ 2027 class, joining Kamarui Dorsey, JayQuan Snell, and Raylaun Henry. The Aggies also had chances with John Meredith (who just reclassified to 2026 and enrolled at Texas) and Joshua Dobson, who ended up committing to South Carolina.
This is a blow to the Aggies’ chances in 2028, but you can bet that, with this much time to pivot, the Aggies are going to make sure they still get some elite defensive back talent coming down the pike. This is an unwelcome development, to be sure, but it’s one that the Aggies’ coaches will have to take in stride.
