Texas A&M dominated Mississippi Valley State tonight 120-84. While this was the most points the Aggies have scored all season, their defense gave up the most points that MVSU has scored against any NCAA division 1 team in their current coach's tenure.
Six different Aggies scored in double figures tonight, led by Mackenzie Mgbako with a season high 19 points. Zach Clemence had a season high 15 points, and Jamie Vinson had another season high with 12 points. Ruben Dominguez, Marcus Hill, and Josh Holloway also scored in double figures.
Texas A&M shines on offense vs MVSU but needs defensive improvement quickly
The Aggies shot the ball very well tonight going 50% from the field and 47% from beyond the arc, but the major difference in this game was at the free throw line. The Aggies earned themselves 50 free throw attempts tonight and made 42 of them, while MVSU only had 19 attempts.
Offense wasn't the issue in this game, the defense was. This was the 4th game in a row where the Aggies allowed their opponent to shoot 45% or better from beyond the arc. One of the MVSU players I said to lookout for, Michael James, went off for 32 points, shooting 7-10 from beyond the arc.
The one major bright spot for the Aggies defense was the turnover margin. They forced a season-high 31 turnovers, while only turning the ball over 13 times themselves. At some points, this looked like one of those all offense, no defense intramural games that you would see at the rec.
The Aggies will have two days off before heading to Tampa to take on the Florida State Seminoles on Friday. The Aggies are currently 0-2 against fellow power conference opponents and will be desperately looking for their first major win on Friday. Check back tomorrow for my full preview on Friday's matchup.
