For the first time in recent memory, a playoff committee actually got it right when it comes to the Aggies. Despite many thinking that the committee would place Georgia at number 3, the Aggies remain at number 3 and are still the highest ranked SEC team in the nation.
The Committee showed a decent amount of consistency this week after not having A&M jump Indiana last week. They still kept Texas Tech over Ole Miss, Ole Miss over Oregon, and Oregon over Notre Dame. Although the committee was consistent at the top of the rankings, a lot of fanbases of teams currently on the outside looking in will not be happy.
The Notre Dame ranking at number 9 seems to be the biggest point of contention among fanbases. Notre Dame is sitting at 10-2, with two ranked losses and only one ranked win. Miami fans are upset considering that they beat Notre Dame head-to-head and are 10-2 themselves. BYU fans are upset since they are 10-1, with one ranked win, one ranked loss, and are still behind Notre Dame and Alabama.
Texas A&M relieved that committee got their ranking right, unlike many others
Georgia Tech remains the lone P4 team with 1 loss outside of the top 15. They did not move up at all despite their win, as ugly as it was. Georgia Tech, however, still controls their own destiny, unlike fellow playoff contender from the ACC, Miami.
Another question arises with how USC and Michigan were placed. USC jumped up two spots with their win over Iowa, yet Michigan stayed put after their win over Northwestern. Even with a 3rd loss, the committee kept Texas above Michigan, but not USC.
5 previously unranked teams came back into the rankings this week, led by Illinois at number 21. I have two questions for the committee here. Why is a 3-loss Illinois ranked ahead of a 3-loss Missouri, but not at 3-loss Tennessee? And if Illinois is ranked with 3 losses, why isn't Washington ranked with 3 losses and a head-to-head win over the Illini?
Lots of questions and debates will continue to occur over the next two weekends. A lot of football is left to play, and these rankings could be drastically different. That's why college football is the best. Check back later this week for your games to lookout for with potential playoff implications.
