AP Poll fallout: Texas A&M rises to highest ranking since 2021 as Texas drops out

This would have gobsmacked many in the preseason, but it's the world we now live in.

Texas A&M has risen to a top-five ranking in this week's AP Poll, making it the first time they've been that high in the poll since the 2021 season.

The Aggies are just barely behind the Ole Miss Rebels (A&M has 1361 points compared to the Rebels' 1376) but are a good bit ahead of seventh-ranked Indiana (1213 points). They are just ahead of the Oklahoma Sooners (1346 points), who they jumped over this past week after demolishing Mississippi State.

Texas A&M last achieved this ranking near the beginning of the 2021 season, when they defeated the Kent State Golden Flashes in game one— they were ranked 6th to start off the year, but then they rose one spot thanks to no. 3 Clemson losing to Georgia in the opener. Things began to go awry against Colorado the following week when Haynes King was lost for the year and Zach Calzada took over— and we all know what happened from there.

Texas A&M rises to top-five status for first time since 2021 as rival Longhorns drop out

At that point, the Aggies were mostly coasting on their reputation from the previous year when they finished 4th overall in the rankings. This year, however, the top-five ranking has been completely earned every step of the way— from the win in South Bend to these previous two annihilations of quality SEC opponents, the Aggies have merited this rank.

The Longhorns are reliving 2021 as well, as a matter of fact— but that's not a happy occurrence in Austin. Sark's first season saw Texas finish 5-7 with an almost nonfunctional offense, and you currently have Longhorn fans predicting even worse records than that.

Texas has fallen all the way out of the poll after losing to a pretty bad Florida team down in the Swamp, putting many Horn fans down in the dumps. They play Red River this weekend, but may avoid John Mateer at QB, which would give them a chance.

The Aggies host those same Florida Gators this weekend in hopes of moving to 6-0. After that, the toughest stretch of the season begins with three straight road trips to Arkansas, LSU, and Missouri.
