Texas A&M stayed undefeated this week with a dominant and decisive win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs— but other top ten teams were not so lucky in their week six matchup.
Both the ninth-ranked Texas Longhorns and the seventh-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions fell to teams with more losses than wins, meaning it could soon be curtains for those squads in the upcoming poll. Neither has a win over a Power Four team at this point, and it's getting a little late in the season to keep such teams ranked in the top 25.
Vanderbilt and Florida State both lost as well, rounding out the ranked teams that sustained losses this week— of course, both of those losses came to teams ranked higher than them, which is pretty relevant.
So, is there any latitude for Texas A&M to move up a spot? Let's break it down and see if the Aggies can move in this week's upcoming poll.
Projecting Texas A&M's place in week seven AP Poll after several ranked upsets
This last week, Oklahoma was ranked one spot ahead of Texas A&M despite the Aggies putting together a more impressive win over Auburn than the Sooners did— and OU was idle. However, I think the fact that Penn State will no longer be splitting the vote right behind the Aggies will aid A&M.
OU was only five votes ahead of Texas A&M in the poll, meaning that the Aggies were a hair's breadth from holding that fifth overall ranking. Ole Miss had a little bit more of a lead, but the difference between 1354 and 1308 actually isn't all that significant.
That said, I'm not sure the Aggies jump both OU and Ole Miss, though it's possible. This was a dominant win for Texas A&M over a team that had been receiving votes in some polls, so I think it will buoy them to a little bit of a higher ranking this week.
My official prediction is that the Aggies pass up the Oklahoma Sooners, who played the worst team in FBS this week in Kent State, and move into the 5th spot. They'll be just behind Ole Miss, but I think we see them make it above the Sooners at least.
