UPDATE: Bethel-Roman has re-entered the game on the following drive after sitting out the first series. He has not had a target yet as of the 2-minute timeout in the first half.
Texas A&M football has had two good-looking drives so far in this game against their rival Texas Longhorns, but both have pulled up short in the red zone after injuries to key starters. First, it was Marcel Reed pulling up after making a cut on the cheap plastic turf in Austin, and now it's receiver Ashton Bethel-Roman.
Ashton Bethel-Roman, or ABR as most Aggie fans call him, has really come on as a deep threat for the Aggies in the second part of this year. His ability to get open way downfield has served the Aggies well, and his aplomb at making contested catches has been big for A&M too.
He caught a short crossing route from Reed on a third down and 12 before being tackled by a Texas cornerback. The tackle was a bit awkward, and when you can't play on a premium surface like the Kyle Field grass, you're likely to see injuries like this occur.
Ashton Bethel-Roman injury update: Aggie receiver goes down with injury in red zone
Texas A&M has had two possessions in the red zone now, and have only come away with three points. Penalties have played a part there, as they have had false starts inside the 20 both times, but the injuries certainly don't help things.
It's possible that Bethel-Roman could have fought off the tackle and kept going, but the turf catching his ankle up seems to have eliminated that possibility.
According to the Texas A&M radio broadcast, Bethel-Roman exited the field of play "mostly" under his own power. Hopefully, he— like Marcel— will be able to return to the game soon.
