Bucky McMillan’s nascent tenure in College Station is already off to a roaring start in the transfer portal. The Aggies just added a guy who came out of high school with a higher recruit rating than anyone they’ve ever signed, and they’re not done yet.
As expected, McMillan is already drawing on his Samford roots to build a team this late in the portal cycle. While there was an unexpected defection by one former member of McMillan’s squad, he just added a piece that is just as important.
Josh Holloway, the former sixth man for the Bulldogs and a player who embodies the mentality behind Bucky Ball, has committed to Texas A&M. This is a really high-quality addition for the Ags; even though he doesn’t come in as a formerly-decorated recruit, his resume speaks for itself.
This A&M roster is really starting to come together. The Aggies needed to move quickly given the time (or, more accurately, lack of time) that they had in the portal, and McMillan has not only done that, but been assembling a really solid staff at the same time.
This is reminiscent somewhat of the run that Mike Elko went on when he took over for Texas A&M football. When he took the reins, the Aggies had to do a heck of a rebuilding job for their roster, and he made quick work of the portal.
With the level of contribution that Elko got out of those portal players, A&M fans can only hope McMillan’s portal work is similar. Of course, most contribution this upcoming year will be from portal players, given that they will make up nearly all of A&M’s roster.
This will be a far different-looking Aggie team than we’ve seen in recent years, without a doubt. But it’s safe to say, with the additions of guys like Holloway, that McMillan is building a lot of anticipation for tipoff next season.
