Despite fringe protests, CFP field nearly entirely locked in after rivalry weekend

Despite few major upsets, the playoff field looks to be mostly locked up headed into conference championship weekend.

Unfortunately, we had a pretty boring weekend of college football. A slate that was set to bring a lot of potential drama underdelivered in a big way. Yes, Friday night sucked for us Aggie fans, but Texas A&M was already securely in the playoffs. Outside of that, no other teams in the top 14 lost this week.

So, what does this mean for the playoff field? Unfortunately for the teams currently on the outside looking in, their hopes for a playoff spot are probably gone. These teams would include Utah, Vanderbilt, and Miami. All 3 team end their regular seasons at 10-2 but will not be making their conference championship games.

There will be one team that is currently on the outside looking in that could throw the playoffs into chaos. That team would be BYU. They still have a chance to get an automatic bid this weekend if they can beat Texas Tech. That would likely force out either Oklahoma, Notre Dame, or Alabama, if they lose to Georgia this weekend. Could we see Texas Tech out with a loss? Potentially, but I highly doubt it.

With the lack of major upsets, the only big question tomorrow is likely to be how far from Texas A&M will fall in the rankings. It is suspected that A&M will fall into that 4-7 range. Personally, I think the Aggies should only drop to number 4, and worst-case number 6. They have a better resume than Texas Tech, Ole Miss and Oregon.

Worst case, the Aggies should be in the 5-6 range. If you compare them to Oregon, A&M has the better win, better SOS and better SOR. If you compare them to Texas Tech, A&M has a far better SOS, better SOR, a better loss, and a better best win. Texas Tech only has 2 top 15 wins to hang their hat on. If you compare them to Ole Miss, A&M has a far better SOS, a better SOR, but Ole Miss has the better loss and a slightly better win (at #8 OU vs at #9 ND).

Tomorrow night should bring us a lot of clarity on how locked up this playoff field will be. Check back tomorrow night for our reactions to the latest CFB Playoff rankings.
