The Sooners finally made it back to the College Football Playoff this year, by hook or by crook. Brent Venables successfully silenced the noise surrounding his job security in so doing, but with the way things unfolded in the final game, there still have to be some questions in the mind of OU fans.

John Mateer, when healthy, really looked the part of an elite quarterback more often than not— the issues came with him taking far too many chances with the football. Carelessness can kill you when playing high-level defenses— or even mid-level SEC defenses as we saw in the Red River Rivalry— so the decision making needs to be worked on.

It bears mentioning, though, that he had less than zero support in the run game. If the Sooners can get that figured out coming into 2026, this will really be a team to be reckoned with. The defense, which was patently outstanding this season, doesn’t look like they’ll take a step back, either.

For all their flaws, you have to respect what OU accomplished this season. Against one of the toughest schedules in the country, they made it to ten wins— and that is worth appreciating.
