Former Texas A&M football fan favorite scorns Aggie faithful by transferring to rival

There's no quicker way to go from a player beloved by Texas A&M football fans to in the doghouse than transferring to a hated rival.

Texas A&M football fans are no stranger to the give and the take of the transfer portal. The Aggies have lost some notable names since the advent of the free transfer, but have managed to retain most of their big time players during this cycle.

Most of the losses to the portal for this year have been players that were set to be passed up— or already had been. Conner Weigman's book in College Station was clearly closed, so his departure was anticipated. Martrell Harris had yet to see significant playing time, so his announcement came as no surprise— and on, and on.

There are a couple of players, though, who Aggie fans would have rather stayed. Noah Thomas is maybe the biggest name on this list, though his decision to head to Georgia is looking more and more questionable as the days go on.

One player whose exit was also unfortunately anticipated was Donovan Green. Green, who was set to be a huge piece of the 2023 season, suffered a season-ending injury in fall camp of that year, one which lingered all the way into this season as well. He got next to no playing time this year, and so his decision was one that Aggie fans had considered only a matter of time in coming.

Donovan Green leaves Texas A&M football for rival LSU Tigers

However, though his decision to depart was understandable, his choice of destination is one that will no doubt be the fount of some hard feelings among the Aggie faithful. Earlier today, Green announced that he would be transferring to one of A&M's chief rivals in the LSU Tigers.

When leaving the Aggies, I think there are only two destinations bound to conjure up some bitter feelings: LSU and Texas. No matter where else, fans will generally be understanding, all else being equal, but the animosty between the Aggies and those two fanbases make the calculus quite different.

This is a gamble by Green on himself, for sure. The Aggies and Tigers play every year, and you can bet this will be just that much more motivation for A&M fans and players in that game.
