Players to watch for Texas A&M vs. the Citadel
Brady Hart
At some point during this game, we will see the current backup quarterback, Brady Hart, taking some snaps. Some fans hope that it will be pretty early on during the game— in fact, there is a large contingent of fans who hope that Hart is the one who gets the start against the Bulldogs.
That seems unlikely at this point for a host of reasons, but if Hart gets out there and registers some good snaps against The Citadel, it will only grow the currently-raucous calls for him to be the starter going forward. Marcel Reed's level of play has deteriorated to that point now— this isn't just the normal set of ingrates who always want to see the backup.
Of course, there are few better ways to ruin a young quarterback than to stick him behind a struggling offensive line and send him to a venue like Bryant-Denny against an Alabama defense that looks elite. It's the same reason the Browns always have bad QB play: the young guys they put in there are never able to build any momentum. It's a risky proposition, but that risk won't make fans stop calling for it.
Brandon Davis-Swain
No. 11 on defense looked like an absolute monster last week against Missouri for the first half. He, like most other players on his side of the ball, eventually had his level of play dip after the offense kept putting the defense back out there, but now that he's fully healthy, he looks every bit of the player A&M hoped he would be.
Defensive tackle hasn't been as impactful as many Aggie fans had anticipated, however— but Davis-Swain coming into his own will help there. DJ Hicks has been solid, if not flashy, and CJ Mims has been improving, so adding another player to that mix will help.
He'll be key against the Citadel's run scheme, less so in shooting gaps and making crowd-pop-inducing tackles for loss, and more in holding up the offensive line and pushing them back. This can be a confidence-boost game for the defense at every level, and Davis-Swain will be a big part of that.
Aaron Gregory
With the Aggies' continued injury issues at the wide receiver spot, this could be a recovery game for Mario Craver, who, according to Elko's presser, is battling multiple injuries. Though Gregory isn't the guy who will step in behind Craver— that would be TK Norman— I think this is a chance for one of the most-hyped young receivers from this offseason to make some noise in a game.
Gregory was a five-star talent early on in his high school career, but the rating services ended up fading on his potential by the time he graduated. Despite that, he's still an extremely polished and high-quality player even this early on in his career, and he'll be making key catches for the Aggies over the next few years.
It would be great to have a guy like Gregory going and more integrated into the offense headed down the stretch of the year, and this is a chance to jump start that process. Hopefully, we see this offense do just that.
