Texas A&M football fans emotional after post circulates showing Conner Weigman alone on Kyle Field following Texas loss
The story of Texas A&M football in 2024 can't really be told without telling the story of the upheaval at the quarterback position. I wish that sentence didn't apply to any of the last four seasons, actually, but it sadly does.
Conner Weigman began the year as the unquestioned starter. After a debacle of a performance against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, however, fans quickly became disgruntled. He bounced back the next week against McNeese, but the quality of opponent meant most fans were unmoved by that showing.
He was then sidelined with an injury for the next couple of weeks, as Marcel Reed took the reins. Reed's brilliance against Florida had some fans clamoring for a permanent change. By the time the Missouri game came around, though, Weigman was healthy—and he responded with the kind of masterful performance that had fans dreaming of a Heisman trophy with him at the helm.
Then came the LSU game, however, where Weigman once again struggled mightily. In the second half, a change to Reed boosted the Aggies over the Tigers, and that was all she wrote for Conner. Reed was the guy going forward for the remainder of the year.
There's no announcement yet, but the common thought is that Weigman will look for a fresh start elsewhere via the portal this offseason. After the game against Texas, Mike Leslie of WFAA captured a photo of no. 15 alone on the field in an empty stadium:
For those who are unable to read his post, it says the following:
"Last night after the conclusion of Texas-Texas A&M, Aggies quarterback Conner Weigman walked the field in his uniform one last time.
"The former starter for A&M was replaced by Marcel Reed during the year, and is likely to enter the transfer portal to figure out what he'll do with his final two years of eligibility.
"He told our crew down there on the field that he wanted to just take in all that Kyle Field has to offer, one more time."
This was a punch to the gut for many Aggie fans, most of whom never wished Weigman ill. The former five-star represented a lot of hope for A&M, with his flashes of brilliance—like that against Ole Miss in his freshman year, against Miami in 2023, and against Missouri this season—showed a guy that, at his best, could take A&M to the promised land.
You even had fans making sad edits of Weigman, including this video and highlights.
Wherever he goes, Aggie fans will be behind him and wishing him well. So many A&M fans wanted for it to work out well for him here in Aggieland. Now that it looks like that won't happen, the Maroon and White faithful are wondering what could have been.
