Texas A&M has been recruiting lights-out for most of this 2026 cycle so far, landing top-rated prospects left and right to assemble an extremely impressive group already. However, with the prospective commitment of the top-ranked recruit in the nation per ESPN's rankings in Lamar Brown, the time has come to start closing on the toughest battles they've yet had.
Brown has been back and forth between the Aggies and Tigers for quite some time, and with his residency in Baton Rouge playing in the Tigers' favor, this would be the ultimate coup for Mike Elko if he can pull it off. More than that, this could be a recruitment that decides whether or not the Aggies do end up with the top-rated class in the nation.
It's no secret that Texas A&M has been in contention for that top spot for a while now, and while one recruit— even one as talented as Brown— won't make or break the class in general, it's hotly-contested recruitments like this one that make or break a shot at the top overall spot.
Lamar Brown decision could determine Aggies' shot at top overall class
The Aggies already have loads of talent in this class, including a true-blue five-star type of talent in Brandon Arrington, and a great shot at other players of that caliber. Tank Jones, Tristen Keys, and others are all players that the Aggies have an in with.
However, losing out on Brown would be deleterious in more ways than one. Not only would it mean that the Aggies lose a possible stud at the top of their class, but that stud goes to LSU, who is also in competition for the top spot.
This is a decisive race for that fact alone. Of course, if the Aggies were able to flip Keys away from the Tigers, that would be a watershed moment as well, but that's not something you can count on.
This just adds to the intrigue that both sides will be feeling as they tune into Brown's commitment on ESPN2 later today. Hopefully, we see him don the Maroon and White
