Top five Texas A&M football recruits of all time - No. 3: Reggie McNeal (0.9970)
This is a name that came to the Aggies in the nascent years of the internet recruiting era. Reggie McNeal was the real deal, however: a huge, uber-athletic quarterback, the pride of Lufkin high school was not only an elite passer but an elite sprinter as well.
As a freshman, McNeal delivered on his promise immediately, coming off of the bench to bring the Aggies to a huge victory over number one Oklahoma in College Station. The very next week, though, McNeal would sprain his ankle, an injury that would lead to him missing the rest of the season.
Over the next three years, Aggie fans didn't really see the progression they had hoped out of McNeal. Though he was clearly a premier athlete and had all the natural skills in the world, he never really became the passer that he could have.
Those were turbulent years under Franchione, as any Aggie fan could tell you. That no doubt contributed to McNeal's less-than-ideal progression in Aggieland.
His athletic talents were too much to deny, however, and he was drafted as a wide receiver by the Cincinnati Bengals in the sixth round. He played a few snaps at QB, but it wasn't long before he washed out of the league. He notched a couple of years in the CFL, but couldn't find his footing there either. This is another "what could have been" story for the Aggies.
