Texas A&M has a great start on their 2028 recruiting class right now, setting a much-needed foundation early on with the commitment of 5-star quarterback Donald Tabron out of Cass Technical in Detroit, Michigan. Tabron was a huge win for the Aggies over LSU and Oregon when he committed— but LSU and Lane Kiffin are not done recruiting him, clearly, as he is apparently set to visit Baton Rouge this weekend.

That would be bad enough on its own, of course, but the wrinkle here that Aggie fans should all immediately understand is that Kiffin has made a distinct choice to have Tabron come visit on the week that the Aggies are going to be in town. That’s something of a gamble for Kiffin, of course— but he’s a guy who is known for taking risks.
As a head coach, you don’t want to bring in a player who is going to be recruiting for another team while he’s on campus— we’ve heard stories of this kind of thing happening, and if you are bringing in a player for a game who is committed to the visiting team, then you run that risk. However, if you get a big win over that team, it can also function as one heck of a statement to that recruit.

The flip side, though, is how it will affect a recruit if the other team wins. Things don’t look super positive for the Aggies right now overall after that game against Kentucky, but if A&M is somehow able to go into Death Valley and get a win, then it’s going to be hard for Kiffin and company to come back from that.
They’re playing from behind quite a bit right now anyway, as Tabron’s commitment to A&M is pretty solid. In fact, that may be the only reason he is agreeing to come visit the Tigers in the first place— though you would rather him simply only visit Kyle Field, of course.
That’s something of an impractical wish when it comes to the way these high-level players are recruited nowadays, though. You can’t expect a guy of this caliber to never take a single visit after committing early in his junior season— and he’s not made any announcement of his recruitment being shut down, either.
Hopefully that announcement will be coming soon, but if the Aggies keep playing as badly as we saw last Saturday, then it’s not likely to be in the cards in the near future. The plain fact of the matter is that the Aggies need to have on-field success as a proof of concept for these high-level players— because if they don’t, other teams that do will swoop in to poach them.
That’s what Kiffin is hoping to do, even though his own program is coming off of a loss right now as well. This only heightens the importance for the Aggies of coming into Death Valley and getting a second-straight win, as tough of a task as that is.
Elko had better understand this as the challenge that it is to his staff and come out ready to deal with it. The Aggies have plenty of reason to come out firing on all cylinders here— this diabolical move by Kiffin just adds yet one more.
